Production stopped in 1981 but in 1989 production resumed with limited production, which continued under the ownership of Hiram Walker 'till late 1996. When Bry Simpson, Canada’s Ardbeg Brand Ambassador, provided me a sample of the regular Ardbeg Kelpie release, I had the opportunity to do a comparison between the two. Palate: Now this is Ardbeg, peat and ashes but still sporting a round edge, honey and apricots sweetness, salt, hints of salami and Kabanos.

Spicy black pepper and a splash of water brings forth some classic Ardbeg notes, such as creamy coffee, smoked fudge and pine resin. A wonderful, intense, ‘dancing’ nose, with lots of different, intertwined aromas – powerful, oily peat, dark chocolate, smoked fish, hints of seaweed, and a curious, sharp herbal note. Ardbeg Kelpie is the 2017 Ardbeg Day bottling and was named after the water spirits that are said to wreak havoc with travellers around Ardbeg.

Whisky from these casks has then been married with regular bourbon cask matured Ardbeg and bottled for Fèis Ìle 2017 at 46%. Finish: Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar and rich coffee. The base of the whisky was matured for the first time in new oak casks from the Republic of Adygea (in southern Russia). We have visited them regularly since their construction and thought of them as we consumed this Ardbeg whisky part-matured in virgin Black Sea oak casks as well as standard American oak ex-Bourbon casks before being masterfully married together to produce this Kelpie expression by Dr.
